Get to Know
Dr. Marlene Shevenell
Dr. Shevenell has been working in the dental field for an incredible 47 years and counting so far, and she never gets tired of meeting new people and helping them smile brighter through her efforts. New patients will quickly learn that she’s an optimist – in fact, she believes the Orioles will win the World Series this year! If you’d like to learn more about her background, just keep reading below.
Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
Dr. Shevenell’s father was a dentist for over 40 years, partnering with Dr. Victor Leocha in the very same dental office that she now works in. When she was in high school (which was at the time called Maryland Hall for the Arts), she would regularly walk home and stop by the dental office to visit her father. Because she was “too chatty,” Miss Williams at the front desk put her to work right away – before she knew it, she was filing charts and answering the phone! The rest is history. Some people grow up wanting to be a policeman or a fireman, but these experiences resulted in Dr. Shevenell feeling absolutely confident that she wanted to be a dentist.
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
After graduating from the University of New Mexico with her undergraduate degree, Dr. Shevenell achieved her Doctor of Dental Surgery at UMD Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. She has been a member of the American Dental Association (ADA) since she completed dental school, which gives her valuable access to continuing education that sharpens her clinical skills and helps her preserve and protect public oral health. She is also the current president of the Maryland State Dental Association!
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
Dr. Shevenell has been married to her husband Thomas Baines for 40 years so far, and they share three children and three granddaughters. Whenever she isn’t busy at the dental office, gardening (mostly vegetables) is one of her passions, as well as spending quality time with her granddaughters! The oldest two often spend the night or weekend, and when they go home, her other hobby is picking up lots and lots of toys. Her youngest is still an infant, and while she can’t play with toys just yet, she does create a lot of laundry. All of her giggles, coos, and hugs fill Dr. Shevenell’s heart with joy. God has truly blessed her with three little angels.
