Dr. John Vanik
For Dr. Vanik, one of the best parts of being a dentist is transforming someone’s perspective of the field from fear due to poor past experiences to overwhelming positivity. Rebuilding their confidence through recreating their natural smile will always be a rewarding experience for him! Today, he’s proud to follow in his father's footsteps by serving the practice he founded and honoring the tradition of making quality patient care top priority.
Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
In the sixth grade, Dr. Vanik was brought into his dad’s office to assist him with an after-hours case, and the experience was so exciting and satisfying that he knew right then he wanted to pursue dentistry as a career too. For the next 10 years, he continued to learn more about the field through shadowing, community service, and further education while also exploring all the different ways of getting into dental school – and the rest is history!
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
Dr. Vanik’s college career started at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where he studied biochemistry and molecular biology. This prior course allowed him to approach dentistry through a very scientific lens. He then pursued his dental doctorate at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, which was great for a few different reasons. First, because it’s the first dental school in the world and offers outstanding training in conventional dental techniques, and second, because they spend a great deal of time ensuring that dentists who graduate from the program are very confident with procedures that many graduates from other schools don’t quite master.
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
Dr. Vanik is married to his lovely wife Adeline and is fortunate to have two wonderful parents, two awesome in-laws, and a younger brother. When he isn’t busy at work, he loves to travel! So far, he’s gone throughout Europe, North America, and some of Asia with his wife; personally, he’s reached 25 countries in total. His experiences overseas and around the country have definitely broadened his perspective. He also really enjoys trying foods and drinks from other cultures.
As for personal hobbies, he likes to hunt, fish, read, and work out. He’s a big sports fan too and keeps up with international soccer in particular – in fact, he and Adeline were both the captains of their respective varsity soccer teams in high school!
