Should you use your previous aligners in the meantime? Will your treatment be significantly delayed if you can’t find them? Is it expensive to have them replaced? These are just a few of the questions that flood your mind when you reach for your Invisalign trays only to find out that they’ve seemingly vanished. Instead of panicking, read on to learn what to do when your aligners go missing.
What You SHOULDN’T Do
When you first realize you’ve misplaced your aligners, you may be tempted to keep it a secret. After all, what’s the harm of just moving onto the next set of trays? It’s not like your dentist will be able to tell, right? Wrong! Each one of your aligners is custom-made to apply just the right amount of pressure to your teeth in that specific phase of your treatment. Using a previous aligner or jumping ahead can significantly impede your progress. Instead, follow the best practices in the next section.
What to Do If You’ve Lost An Aligner
It’s natural for your stomach to drop when you don’t immediately locate your trays. However, it’s important to do your best not to panic. After all, a frantic mind won’t help you find them any quicker. Instead, calmly retrace your steps, paying special attention to the small crevices they could’ve fallen into. It’s also a good idea to check the garbage, in case they were accidentally discarded. Once you’ve confirmed that your aligners are missing, contact your dentist’s office right away. From there, they can guide you through the next best steps to ensure you stay on track with your treatment plan.
3 Tips to Avoid Losing Your Aligners
Since misplaced aligners can mean more time (and money!) spent on treatment, it’s best to keep them safe by:
- Having a designated case for them (preferably one that doesn’t blend in)
- Not taking them out of your mouth unless you are eating or completing your oral hygiene routine
- Never placing them on a table or wrapping them in a tissue or napkin
With the above tips in mind, you should never have to worry about losing your aligners. However, if they do accidentally get misplaced throughout your treatment, contact your dentist right away!
